With almost every London restaurant sadly closed, it has been quite a challenge entering the unknown territory, My Kitchen, previously used for extra storage and now brimming with smoothie ingredients, I haven’t yet gone as far as cooking every evening, but certainly giving explorative breakfasts and lunches a good shot!
Being the epitome of a twenty-something city dweller with the ideology of cereal being an impressive meal, I have been lusting after some top-notch cuisine. Some of my favourite restaurant haunts are offering a bespoke delivery service, providing a small yet fanciful menu of there must-loved dishes. Trying to vicariously live through these take-outs, I have tried them all, and lucky for you, here comes the verdict.
Zuma
Well, if Chef Rainer Becker has been indulging in home quarantine comforts and providing zoom tutorials to his chefs at the HQ in Knightsbridge I could understand the dissatisfaction. Usually my go-to restaurant spot all over the globe, has unfortunately, in my personal opinion missed the mark. I tried a selection of sushi’s, salad’s, vegetarian dishes and of course the chocolate fondant, which were all very tasteless. It could well be that the informal izakaya-style dining we are used to, is best enjoyed with its usual buzzy and bustling atmosphere.
Coya
Think self-isolation means you have to compromise on luxury? Think again. An absolute favourite for my regular Peruvian desires, despite missing an expertly blended spicy margarita, it ticked all the right taste buds, even on the occasion I most dispel, my birthday. Ordering my usual, truffle risotto, sweetcorn salad, giant prawns, ceviche (Atun Chifa) and to finish things off Mochi ice-cream, each dish tasted fresh from the robata grill and met the calibre of restaurant standard.
Hakkasan
With the eponymous gold leafed dim sum bearing too much to resist, Hakkasan was one of the first luxury-outs I decided to opt for, perhaps synonymous with the exquisite container it is delivered in I saw entering a neighbour’s home just a few days prior. Uniquely Hakkasan teamed up with SUPPER a high-end food delivery app which promises to bring some of the capital’s best food direct to your sofa, with a usp of specialised scooters ensuring meals are kept in tip top condition while on the move. Again, choosing the usual, salads, chow mien, sticky rice and a selection of sweet and sour options, delivery and the eclectic flavour offerings were uncompromisingly delicious, however, certainly best left to its synonymous dark and endearing restaurant hubs, which captures the true Cantonese authenticity.
Sushi Samba
Shedding a reminiscent tear at the lack of panoramic skyline views from the Heron Tower, another day, another delivery. The burgeon menu of delights brought back instant gratification, being quiet the subjective sushi advocate I over-ordered a selection of Taquitos, Moqueca Mista and Samba Rolls, that I later wished I hadn’t, unfortunately, again another sob story of dissatisfaction. Somewhat soggy and flavourless, to the contrary, the presentation of the dishes was by far the best I have seen yet! But lacked in its usual hedonistic flavourings.
The habitual purveyors of high-end culinary satisfaction have provided me with both happiness and disappointment, during these times I have been rationalising by taking each day with a pinch of salt, leaving no gastronomic stoned unturned, I will proceed in eating my way through London’s 5* offerings.
